Bio: Allistair 'Tay' Jaako is one of the few humans who has what the government call 'Skills', superpower-like abilities. In Tay's case he's a Phase-Shifter: he can walk through walls and people, and weapons can pass straight through him.
Tay has been with the government for longer than he can remember, and that is for the simple reason that he has been a guinea-pig in covert studies since he was passed over to them as a baby. Having survived all the experiments he was put through he was educated and then, having survived until the age of twelve, was sent to the Academy, the branch of the government that deals with educating Skilled children and, ultimately, moulds them into the perfect agents.
Having passed his exams with almost-flying colours (don't mention Geography) Tay then settled into a life spent in government service. They provided him with an apartment and a wage and in his turn he worked in a team with other Skilled agents, tracking and neutralising--in any way necessary--threats to the country.
However, after some harsh words were thrown around during one operational meeting that went sour, Tay stormed out and left his team to plan the operation without him. In his absence, his team followed a plan laid out by a colleague that led ultimately to their deaths. Tay, realising something was wrong far too late to be able to do anything about it, discovered their bodies; despite his grief and his screaming insistence the organisation they had been investigating had done it, he was suspected of killing them and taken into confinement.
A few months passed before he found out whether he would be processed and sent to Research, the department he had begun his life in and fully expected to end it in, or whether he would be exonerated. Despite fully expecting it to be the former, his previous Supervisor spoke up for him and he was instead transferred to a newly formed Investigations department along with two other staff members with difficult pasts and a new Supervisor on his last warning for poor treatment of agents and who makes his hatred of Tay perfectly clear, despite the fact Tay has never met him before in his life.
Tay's new life is more difficult. He's waiting for his Supervisor to finally lose his temper entirely and dispatch him to Research, his new Team Leader keeps trying to mother him--like he'd even know how it felt--while her electrokinesis Skill could get him killed and he isn't sure how he even feels about the quiet blond honey-tongue... and then there's Adam, the handsome guy he met at a club shortly after his transfer and who might be a lot more than he seems...

Ostensibly they were dressed in much the same way as the businessmen and women sipping lattes and eating bagels at outside chairs and tables polished so highly they hurt to look at, but Tay just knew they were looking at his plain black suit and cotton shirt and comparing it to their silk jackets and high thread count designer shirts, most of which cost more than he’d hope to earn in a month even if he was sure he was being paid at all any more. He didn’t fit in — they didn’t fit in — and the way the cold gazes slid away from them as they approached the center of the plaza, he could see they knew it.
Yet again, he’d managed to arrive at his job looking like he was hopelessly out of his depth at an interview. And why he felt so self-consciously useless he had no idea; it wasn’t like any of them could walk through walls. “Tay, you can take this area,” Stella mumbled, looking a little green. “Scott can start over there,” she pointed unsteadily to a gap between the buildings that led to another area filled with lunch-partaking businesspeople. “What’ll you do? Got anywhere nice lined up?” Tay laughed softly, then immediately wished he hadn’t, and not just because it made his head ache. Stella’s expression was not one that he would consider impressed. “I… guess that’s a no?” “You remember that shady area we went through?” She asked. “Well, do you remember that argument you had about not wanting to canvas anywhere that would get you nasty looks? Guess where I’m going.” Immediately Tay found himself feeling bad. Their low-volume argument had been taken as seriously as his complaint about her driving, or so he’d thought, but if she was really going to work on an area where even Tay wouldn’t feel safe-- “Don’t worry,” Scott’s soft voice interrupted his thoughts. “I’ll do it. You do mine.” Tay stared at Scott, how slender and delicate he looked, with his pretty face and veil of blond hair, and sighed. “I’ll go, don’t worry.” Rather than acquiesce like Tay expected, Scott stubbornly shook his head. “I’ll start over there,” he pointed the way they had just come, “and work back. I can ring when I need picking up.” That had to be the most Scott had ever said to him, and it was all telling him he didn’t need his help. Tay didn’t know whether to be impressed or insulted. |
